My Life
Lost Memories ~ 16 Years Old (Part I)
I am sitting in another math class, and I am dozing off, can you blame me? It was the last period of the day.
"The log of ten is equals to one..." drones the teacher's monotone voice. The students sitting in the desks on either side of me are already slumped on their table, in an extremely deep sleep. The nerd
in front of me is enthusiastically taking down notes. I yawn, the teacher spots me.
"Ms
Walcott! I see that you find my lesson rather boring, don't you? I am assuming you know all about Logarithms?" sneers my teacher,
Madam Stabio, she has an obvious bias against me, for whatever reason, I have no idea.
I smiled sweetly at her and replied, "Yes
Madam, the log of one is equals to zero,
logaB plus
logaC is equals to
logaBC,
logaB minus
logaC is equals to
logaB over C,
logaB squared is the same as two
logaB, log-"
"Alright, that is enough from you, Miss Know-It-All." She
interrupted. I could almost see her face turning red. The boy behind me started giggling, I turned to give him a smug look. And as usual, the nerd
in front of me stared at me in awe.
After class, I quickly packed my laptop and walked out of class. As I was walking down the hallway, a voice calls from behind me. It is the nerd, what was his name? Tim or something? I turned around to face him.
"Ember! Hey, um, yeah, you were cool in there, yeah, hm.. Well, I'm having a little... um.. problem with my.. uh.. my math and would like to ask.. maybe you could like, give me tuition on it?.. Or something..." He was staring at the ground and
fidgeting with his uniform. I thought to myself, Problems? Yeah, right, you got 97 over hundred for the last test. Obviously, he had other intentions. I was just about to give him my rejection when I heard Kyle, my current boyfriend, walk up behind me and curl his arm around my waist, it sent shivers up my spine.
"I think the teacher would be a better tutor than another student," he said, "After all, like you, she is just learning this stuff too." And with that, Tim nodded and scurried away like a sad little mouse, poor thing. Kyle then proceeded to turn me around to face him and smirked.
"You get yourself into quite
a lot of trouble, don't you?" He said
chidingly. I acted as if I was offended and pushed him away and walked
in front of him. He laughed and ran up behind me. We were going to meet my brother, and we were going for a swim in the lake inside the school grounds.
I returned to my dormitory first, kept my books, changed into my swimming costume, pulled a sweatshirt and shorts over that, and went to the lake to meet them.
It was a beautiful afternoon, the sun was shining, not hot, but warm. Refreshing sunlight shone down on the lake, giving an effect as if the ripples in the water surface were actually diamonds, shimmering beautifully against the lush greenery surrounding it. Such a pity Laura had to go for her drama class, it was such a nice day to swim. Frost and Kyle were sitting by our favourite spot along the surface of the lake, a private little space made rocks and plants, it was
strange, but undeniably beautiful.
"You're late again baby sister! I heard you were busy fighting off the legions of Ember
Walcott fan boys!" teased Frost. I threw my towel to his head and we all laughed. We stripped down to our swimming costumes and jumped into the water. We didn't have to hide our wolfish characteristics anymore, the whole school knew of our "defects", but no one really gives a damn about it,
in fact, some people found it cool. It was good though, I was so sick of hiding my tail under skirts, and I'm sure Frost was sick of wearing baggy shirts to hide his own tail.
The water was cool against our skin, we played around in the water, splashing each other, racing each other. Kyle was so beautiful with the droplets of water making his body glisten, I wanted to attack him right there and then, but of course, I didn't. Then something Frost said gave me a shock.
Frost took out three breathing devices, newest in diving technology, light, portable, small. I gasped. We weren't supposed to dive very far in the lake according to school rules.
"What in the world! Frost! You know we're not supposed to dive too deep in the school lake! Its dangerous!" I voiced my concern.
"Come on Ember, don't worry, not like we'll die or anything. Haven't you ever wondered what was down there? It will be fine, we're here to protect you." Said Kyle,
damn it, he was in on this operation too.
Frost passed me one of the breathing devices. I sighed and complied. I took the breathing device in my mouth and we all went back into the water. On the count of three, we all dived inside, swimming into the dark abyss.
My eyes were closed initially, I was holding onto the hands of both of them, I was, initially, afraid of opening them. Then i felt Frost let go of my hand and pat me on my shoulder, supposedly signalling me to open my eyes, slowly, I let my eyes open. It was weird, because both me and Frost could keep our eyes open without any hesitation when we were in the water, Kyle had to wear goggles though. It looked hilarious on him. I let go of Kyles hand, and when I opened my eyes, what I saw stirred up something in me, it was a weird feeling, mixed of fear and delight. I looked around, the lake was deeper than I thought. There were few fishes around, and those which were present were colourful and small in size. There were underwater plants floating around everywhere, but not so much that it clouded our sight, a small amount of sunlight trickled in from above, making everything mysterious, but extremely beautiful, I could not tell how deep in we were, but what I definitely could see, or rather, couldn't see, was the bottom of the lake.
We swam around together, never getting too far apart, we couldn't afford to lose each other. I don't know how much time had past when we were in the water, when suddenly, I heard a sound, ever so soft, but beautiful. It was a melody. It felt, familiar,
even though I was positively sure I had never heard anything like it in my life. The tune wasn't coming from an
instrument, neither was it singing, I could not tell exactly what it was from, but I was completely lured to it. Thus, like a mouse following the Pied Piper, I swam to follow the sound.
I am not sure if Frost and Kyle followed me, I suppose they did, but I didn't care, all I wanted to do was to get closer to the source of the melody. All rational thought from my conscience was blocked out by that sole thought. I swam down deeper, and closer to the lake wall. I swam until I found a hole in the wall, big enough for me to swim through. It was completely dark, no sunlight penetrated it, but something inside my head told me to continue through, that it was completely safe. So I swam on.
Eventually, the hole led me upwards, and when I broke the water surface, I was in a cave. It was extremely dark, but a small amount of light filtered from above, I couldn't tell exactly from where, or how, but it did. The air here was not stale, it felt, and smelt, fresh, and it was pleasantly warm. I found an ancient looking torch on one of the walls, I am not sure how, but in my hands, it burst into flame. I looked around the now illuminated cave. Surprisingly, the walls were not covered in mildew and moss, instead, it was dry. It was not an
ominous cave,
in fact, it was cosy, and I felt comforted here, more comforted than I had ever felt in my life. I walked in deeper into the cave, into the dark, following the tune.
After a while I came to the end of the tunnel, this was where the melody stopped. This place was so surreal. It looked as if I had come across a room, the walls were flat, the "room" was circular, there was no dust anywhere, it was unbelievably clean. There were crystals lying all around, and they weren't
naturally formed here, the couldn't have been, there were too many different types, Malachite, Quartz, Agate,
Lapis Lazuli, Amethyst, to name a few.
A stray thought of the painting I saw when I first came into the school floated back into my head. The painting of the nymph holding the chalice. A sound came from the other room, "Cole, Cole... Why?" I was lying down in my cot, and I was crying, I was screaming my lungs out, it was my mother's voice, I don't like the sound of it, why isn't she coming here to check up on me? I heard a gasp, and then I heard the sound of liquid flowing into a cup. I cried and thought, Mommy! Where are you? Why aren't you coming to check up on me? Mommy! Mommy!
I closed my eyes, and when I woke up again, I was in a house, not my own. My true father was lying in his bed, with another whore. They both were dead, and I had killed them. Pitiless beast, he deserved what he got, for killing my mother. Weakling, it was far too easy to extinguish his fire. I hope at least now, mother's beautiful soul can finally rest in peace.
I am older now, I can finally be allowed to use my inheritance, this large sum of money that the bastard stole from my mother. My mother's money. I am using it to build a school, a boarding school, where both girls and boys can live in harmony, where they will only grow to love, and be strayed away from the path of deceit, this school will become a haven away from hate, I will not let my mother die in vain. I've got the money for the school, and I have the location, my dream will become a reality.
Ten years have past, it is the Winter Solstice, the 28
th anniversary of my mother's death. I am now a woman of twenty-eight summers, and my dream has now materialised, the school is ready to be
unveiled tomorrow, as
Morrigan High, named after my beautiful mother. There is just one last thing I must do. I head down to the lake, I remove my clothes, shedding myself of outside auras, then, clutching my mother's beloved chalice I dive into the cool water. I hold my breath and swim down, into my private
seomar, I need no light, because this place is so familiar to me, I walk on into the darkness.
I found out long ago, that I am not the true heir of my mother, I am the true daughter, but not the true heir. This chalice was meant for another, and as her wish, I shall keep it safe. Right in the middle of my
seomar, I use my hands and dig deep into the rock and dirt, wrapping the chalice in silk, I place it into the hole and cover it up with dirt. I perform one last spell before I leave the cave, and seal it up so no one but the heir can find it.
When I wake I am still standing in the middle of the room. I start digging in the same spot as in my vision, no surprise, I find a wrapped package, I open it to find the exact same chalice as in the painting. It is beautiful, I hold the warm cup in my hands, feasting my eyes on it. "This belongs to me," I heard myself say. "It is my heritage, and nobody can take it away from me."
"Ember! Ember!" I hear from the other side of the cave, and realising how worried Frost and Kyle must be, I wrap the chalice with the silk and place it back into the hole, I will come back for it later, without Frost and Kyle. I go out of the room, and see Frost and Kyle feeling around in the darkness.
"Guys I'm here!" I call out to them. "Oh thank god" I hear Kyle say and they both run up to hug me.
"Now where did you materialise from?" asked Frost
"What are you talking about? I was in the other room the whole time." I replied. They both looked at me as if I was going mad.
"Ember.. What are you talking about? This is the only room here." asked Kyle suspiciously. I stared at him wide-eyed, then realised, oh right, only I can enter the
seomar.
"Huh? Did I say other room? I meant this one!
Hahahaha.... I guess its just the air in here getting to me.. lets get out then." I laughed as I put on my breathing device and proceeded back into the
dive pool. Without another word, they followed suit.
As I swam away from the cave, I thought in that direction, I will come back for you, I promise. And as I realised that today was the day of new beginnings, I heard a reply.
"I have waited hundreds of years already, another few hours is nothing."
