My Life
Lost Memories ~ 12 years old
Morrigan High, School for the Gifted. In contrast to its name, Morrigan High is actually a school comprising of middle schoolers and high schoolers. Thus we were meant to spend six years here, in this dreary bording school, a school for the wealthy.
I had just started middle school, thrown into a sea of strangers, none of them were my friends from elementry school, and luckily, none of my enemies either.
I came here early on the first day, said teary goodbyes to my mother, and walked into the school compound with Frost, who had already been studying here for two years, only returning home during the summer and Christmas holidays, I missed seeing him and spending time with him alot, and I am so glad that he'll be right here with me for at least the next four years before he heads to college.
We kept our caps on our heads, looking normal among the other kids, it was the start of autumn, after all. Frost first brought me to the students welfare office to claim my timetable and the key for my dormitory.
"Girls' dormitory, Block C, Level 5, number 13," reported the kindly stout lady at the reception desk. I thanked her and took the file from her hands, and hooked the key onto the chain around my neck, which already held the agate friendship pendant my best friend, Chloe Katelyn Kallinghan, gave to me just before I came here.
"Its nice to see that your sister is here, Frost," said the lady, "the both of you are just so adorable and sweet."
"Thank you Miss Rishale, she really is adorable, isn't she!" Frost exclaimed as he started to pet me on the head as if i were a dog. Miss Rishale giggled and waved us off.
As Frost and I walked towards the dorms with our luggage, he recited the major school rules to me one by one.
"1. No boys in the girls' dormitory and vice versa. (I'm watching you!)
2. Students are to be in their dormitories by 10.p.m.
3. Students who deface school property will be severely punished. (If you get caught)
4. School uniforms are to be worn to every class, including the exercise attire and mandatory school swim suits.
5. Teachers' dorms are off limits to students after 9.p.m. (what would we wanna be there for right?)
6. School uniforms are to be worn properly or students will be punished.
7. Thieves will be severely dealt with.
8. Homework and projects are to be handed in on time.
9. Students are required to produce a medical certificate from the school doctors if unwell and unable to attend class.
10. Mp3 players, cellphones, disc man(s), walkmans, portable handheld games and other such entertainment/electronic items are prohibited in class but can be used in dormitories and other student areas."
"And thats the ten commandments of Morrigan High, there are other rules, of course, but those are the few you need to remember." said Frost.
Eventually, we reached the student dormitory area. I was astonished. Several brick-made, five storey blocks stood erected on a large plot of land which was beautifully landscaped. Grey barked elm trees littered the "park", alongside their pine counterparts. Wooden tables and benches were scattered around, under trees, the sky, or cosy canopies. A maze of pebble pathway snaked throughout the park and flowers sprouted at every corner, and in the furthest end from the school, there was a crystal lake, shimmering in the refreshing morning sunlight, detached from the park and yet, blending in with it amazingly.
The girls and boys dormitories were situated at opposite ends of the park, so Frost and I went our seperate ways and settled to meet up two hours later, at ten, when he would show me around the school which was going to be my home for the next six years.
I walked on the pebble path until I reached my block of the girls' dormitories, then I found the elevator and took it up to the fifth floor. There were barely any people in the corridor, but I heard an occasional fit of giggles from inside the rooms. I counted down the numbers until I found my room, and opened the door.
The room wasn't what I expected it to be, awful, cramped, and dull. It was so much better. The walls were painted a light, cream colour, with uniquely styled trimmings running around the borders of the walls, and wood panelled flooring. Two beds lay on either side of the respectable sized room, seperated by at least two metres of floor. The beds were each about a metre in width and two and a half metres in length. Both of which had a wooden frame, two soft, white pillows, and a maroon down-feather comforter, in its corner lies the Morrigan High crest emboidered into the fabric. There was a simple and short wooden headboard on the beds and above it was the large, plated glass window spanning the entire wall less than half a metre above the beds. Two wooden side tables lined the wall in between the beds. Looking backwards, at the foot of the beds, there are dark, mahogany desks leaned against the wall on either side. The tables each had three power-points, and a solitary lamp stood on each. Both study desks has a swivel chair in the maroon shade. There are two closets on either side of the mini corridor leading to the door. In each closet, there was an extra blanket, a small sewing kit to be used if our clothes needed to be mended, two standard issue Morrigan High towels, one in maroon, one in white, and a bookbag embossed with the Morrigan High crest.
The room would have been symmetrical if not for the door, which leads to the room's bathroom on one side, next to the closet, and a small white noticeboard on the other.
I found an electric kettle, an iron, and an ironing board in one of the closets, I'm going to need them throughout my stay. In the desk drawers and I found a school diary, which has a map of the school.
I started unpacking my belongings. Plugged in my "Morrigan High" edition laptop for charging, every student in this school is required to have one, its comes in a maroon coloured case with the Morrigan High crest printed on the corner. The white laptop, too, has a Morrigan High crest painted on it in maroon. I placed my formal, black school shoes and also my slippers into the closet, along with my school uniforms, physical wear, swim suit, and other articles of clothing. I placed my beloved teddy bear on one of the beds, "claiming" it to be mine. I put a clock and a book I was reading onto the bedside table and my textbooks into one drawer of the study desks and my stationary in another, remembering to place my toiletry bag by the sink in the bathroom, and finally, I stored the rest of my luggage into the closet.
I sat on the bed and looked down over the park. More people were gathered now, walking around and hugging their friends, some already sitting at the wooden benches and studying. I think I also caught a glimpse of someone jumping into the lake for a swim.
I went out of the room and locked the door, which had the number "13" printed on it on a small wooden plaque. I wrote my name of a piece of paper and slipped it into the slot just below the number.
I went down to the first floor and walked along the first floor corridor. I found the laundry room and the room of supplies. There was also a room for the girls to "hang-out" or study together. It looked to me like a room where parties are always held.
I walked around the three blocks of the girls' dormitory, greeting random people which i pass. The students here seem pretty friendly.
Just then, I saw a painting, one of a beautiful nymph with wings of fire. I was drawn to this painting. The nymph was holding a jewel encrusted chalice, looking at it with awe. Written on the cup, I saw the words, "I shall wait forever, until my true heir arrives to claim me." I read the words slowly, savouring it with my tongue, and suddenly, I had what seemed like a flashback.
A flow of images passed my eyes, I saw dancing flames, I saw battered wings. I was soaring high above the clouds, free. I saw a man, who was probably in his early twenties, he was extremely handsome. We were in a warm embrace, he was touching me as we kissed. He said he loved me. Next, I saw him at the door, he had a smug look on his face, but I was crying, was I upset? Why was I crying? Then there was another woman at his side, he had his hand around her waist, and I was crying. Now he was embracing her, kissing her as he had kissed me. I had given him everything, everything I had, so why? Why was he doing this? I was cold, very cold.
"Cole, Cole... Why?" I heard myself say. I was home. I wrote a curse onto a painting of me, my favourite one. I took my chalice, and filled it up with my own blood, flowing, from a wound i cut into my wrist. I ignited a fire, and lit the blood on fire, then I let myself die there, thinking about Cole, and how I could only wish my child would have a better life. I drifted off into the darkness, hearing my baby's cries...
I woke up. I was still staring at the painting. My face felt cold and sticky. Tears were dripping down my face, why? I asked myself what happened, I had no answer. I looked at my watch, it was already 10. I decided to think about it later, as I was going to be late to meet Frost.
I saw Frost sitting by one of the benches, he was chatting with someone, I guessed that they were of the same age. I walked over to them. Frost commented how I was late, (by only 5 minutes!) and he introduced me to his friend. I was right, they were the same age, his name is Kyle, and looking at him this close, he was actually quite good looking. Spiked up, short, brown hair, dark, mysterious eyes, an extremely nice smile and a nose so beautiful, he was perfect, and I found myself staring at him for the longest time.
They both took me on a tour around the school, to the science and math block, languages and the arts, the general block, where the doctors are located and other supplies are sold. They even took me to the sports complex. It was all so beautiful, so fine, so unique, I fell in love with the school already.
"So, welcome to Morrigan High, Ember!" announced Kyle, and he gave me a playful smile which sent delighted shivers down my spine. As we walked back to the student dorms, Frost explained that school would only start the next day, so that we have a day to adjust to the school grounds and to get to know some people, cool, I thought.
The three of us hung out by the lake for the rest of the day. Talking halfway, Kyle said he felt hot and proceeded to remove his shirt. Damned. Hot. I thought to myself. Kyle had a perfectly toned body, with washboard abs and thin but toned arms and chest. I don't like buff guys, I prefer pretty boys, and he was definitely one of them. Goddess, I love this guy. He then winked at us and jumped into the lake. "SHOW OFF!" Frost shouted after him.
At 7, we had dinner together, then retired to our dorms. I had just noticed I had yet to meet my room mate.
I entered the room and spotted the girl sitting on the bed, playing some sort of card game. When she noticed me, she faster kept them, attempting to hide the cards, I assumed.
"Are those Tarot cards?" I asked tentatively. The girl gave me a frightened look, then nodded her head.
"THAT.IS.SO.COOL!" I shouted. The girl held an expression of disbelief. "I love the tarot! Which deck is it?" I asked.
Turning red the girl held out the deck which I recognized as the "Universal Rider-Waite" tarot. I went to my drawer and pulled out my own deck, the Crystal Tarot. The girl smiled.
"Thank god! I thought my room mate would be afraid of it and think I am evil or something! Thank god!" she repeated.
"Yeah, thats what I thought, too. I guess this is one thing we have in common, don't we?" I replied. I looked up at the girl, I got a closer look at her face, and realised how pretty she was. Large almond shaped eyes, silky, long honey blonde-ish brown hair, flowerbud lips, "My name is Ember Walcott," I introduced.
"My name is Laura Keene." She replied, and in that instant, I knew, my life at Morrigan High would be a great one.
